Hello to everyone! Well I just registered after doing muiliple searches on cameras, and I am still unsure of what camera I will need for a porno flic. I am getting ready to work on a adult film and I am stuck because I dont know what type of camera to buy. I have heard excellent reviews on the RED ONE but is that what I really need to film? I want to create a film that has the quality of big porno studio. Any suggestions? Thanks

You're kidding right?

You need to register with your own name on this forum FYI.

Frankly I don't think many people here want to lend their technical or artistic talents to support the porn industry.

You're in the wrong forum.

Is this for real... Do you really have to have a sophisticated camera for this kinda thing... my perspectives are if u the plans of doing this, do it with vivid thoughts... for that reason u will have vivid videos as well for your porno flick... cool to the eyes that's what it takes...

However, that's just what i think...

I always heard the XL1 was very popular. The REd could die at a crucial moment, "blowing" a take.

They'd be screwed... for sure.

Well.........

I think a RED would be overkill, plus it would be expensive.

You might consider the HVX200. With 2 16gig P2 cards shooting 720 24p, you could get almost 1 1/2hr long of shooting time before download which I would think should provide plenty of time for a "take".

You may want to consider some diffusion as HD in those tight spaces might not be the most flattering.

Also, as has been stated, you need to use your real name on this forum.

Setting personal morality aside, I'm sure there are a number of professional cameramen who make a living shooting these sorts of movies. I can only imagine, the prosumer camcorder/cellphone has stolen the jobs of many. What is the reason/appeal to shoot with such production value anymore? It would seem that it isn't necessary to be profitable. A webcam, some girls and an apartment would seem to be all that is required.

In the 70s, adult films were shot on 35mm. There was even one shot on 65mm ("Panorama Blue"). This makes sense considering they were shown in movie theaters, so prints were necessary. Obviously home video has changed that entire industry, switching over to video and less focus on plot and camera work, lighting, etc...

There is a notion that cinematography doesn't matter in these films, but I respect that the original poster actually cares about the quality of the images, regardless of the genre. It is my opinion that people should strive to achieve quality in there work whatever it may be. While I, personally do not work in the porn industry, I do not think it is fair to thumb my nose at those who do.

There is no law that says porn has to look like crap. If you want high quality, you could even consider shooting super 16. Although, I'm not sure how long the takes last (You would have to get a special 1200ft for 33 minutes rather 11minutes per roll with a 400ft).

I knew a guy who AC'd on an adult film that was shot on 35mm with a large budget a couple years ago. A Varicam might be something to consider if you have a director that likes slow motion. I did hear somewhere (I think it was actually on this forum) that some porn movies are currently being filmed on the RED. I agree with chad that you should definitely use diffusion filters.

I think you're right bhaby. It doesn't take sophisticated camera to do that. All you need is motivation and a little talent.

Hope i can learn a lot here too.I heard about IAFT is it really good there?

I don't call it porn--I call them Sexumentaries.

I was going to buy a 16mm print of an Andrea True film a few months back. (Remember her? She even had a hit song in the 70s, "More, more more--how do you like it? How do you like it?") I simply wanted at least one copy of classic 70s era film smut.

But I figured, how am I ever going to able to watch it really large screen? Set up my projector in the backyard and get arrested? But no one does these on film any more. No reason to.

I think that in the history of porn, there may have been two or three films that actually bridged the gap between porn and real entertainment, real cinematography, real entertainment. But I can't even say what those films were. "Caligula" comes to mind, but that wasn't really porn.

I was a big fan of Russ Meyers (spelling?). But again, not porn in the true sense.

...Didn't we have this conversation already? (Anyone remember the RED/pr0n thread a while back?)

Shoot on film, man! GO FILM OR GO HOME! :P Give the production company some sort of deceptively wholesome name like "Puppies and Yellow Flowers" and start calling up rental houses.

This thread obviously want's to be polemic, otherwise he wouldn't have written "BEST FOR PORN" with giant capital letters. Well, that set aside I don't see why people get so anxious about a person asking for advice on how to shoot porn. I mean, what's it to you? You don't have to watch it nor read this thread if it makes you uncomfortable. I won't venture my own personal oppinion regarding porn because it wouldn't be very helpful nor would it be anything else than trying to tow the "nice guy" line and say how disgraceful it is.

If your serious about the "best camera for porn?" question, then I would go for a lightweight 16mm camera like the Eclair NPR. And go for a washed out desaturated look with some expired Ektachrome, probably wouldn't be cost feasible for a porn-flick, but at least then you would get some hardcore experimental, porn. Too much mainstream, ugly and uncreative porn floating about. Try something new.
