BEST CAMERA FOR PORN?

Recommended Posts

This thread is an embarrassment (and insult) to the supposed 'professional' nature of this forum.

All I can say is, if you can't cope with this relatively mild bit of badinage, might I respectfully suggest you consider another career path.

Production 101 (Actually, just about anything 101):

Being "serious" about your work does not exclude making jokes about it.

Anybody can be a stuffed shirt, being a professional is a lot harder.

I don't want to imagine certain things @ 1000fps....

But that's the beauty of it: At 1000 fps you won't have to imagine it. You'll be able to see everything in glistening detail.

You can even hire more cameras so you can have slo-mo instant replays from several different angles like they do with the football.

I tell ya, the possibilities are endless.

What about, what about ... 1000fps 3D?!!!!!

1000fps. 3D. In zero gravity.

Well, you can simulate 0G on earth in NASAs appropriately named "Vomit Comet."

In truth; pornographic images as such, 0G in super slow motion, may move out of the "smut" category into art . . . I mean there's a photographer, whose name I forget right now, out in New Mexico, who uses cadavers as his nudes. . .

It would certainly be interesting to see. . . in 3D especially.

Though I don't really want to encourage this topic further, I couldn't help comment that a few months ago I happened to cross paths with a Los Angeles porn-movie director/producer. He was an interesting character, far from seedy, more of a natural charmer and joker if you like.

In his own words in regards to guys who shot porn on 'small cameras' like the Z1s and Canon XLs, he's never shot porn (18 years he pointed out) on small cameras but only on Super 16 and the F900.

One of his Super 16 films was a record breaker in terms of VHS sales, and much of his work was spectacular in nature, he told anecdotes of shooting scenes from helicopters, making one of his male performers climb a 30ft waterfall.

His general view was it was much better to hire highly skilled film crews and pay them extra and treat them well to shoot porn with good production values rather than use low skilled amateurs and try and teach them how to shoot video well.

He said he'd recently bought a batch of EX1s, which he was very impressed with - so there may be the answer to the original question.

How about underwater? You never see any good underwater pornography!

Did you ever see any of Russ Meyer's stuff?

Lookie:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073768/

It ain't porn per se, but if there was anyone who enjoyed filming totally naked women swimming underwater, this is the guy.

A VERY sick man who provided me with endless hours of entertainment while growing up, so he's the reason I'm so screwed up today.

Remember the silents? Where the villain tied the poor damsel to the railroad tracks, with a batch of dynamite ready to blow up right next to her as well?

Where do you think Russ Meyer put the stick(s) of dynamite in HIS film!?

Yeah--it's really that bad.

Being that I've ventured into that realm couple times to film in gaps here in Atlanta, I know 1 company that shot on Digital 8's and didn't really edit. Quality....no...but people bought it. Lately, the companies are jumping into HD, Sony's seems to be the popular choice.

Once again the camera is only as good as the lighting. If you light the hell out of scene with HD you'll need every soft filter/diffusion you can get to lessen the appearance of blemishes.

I guess it matters if you're shooting hardcore of Skinemax style of porn.

Thank you for the info guys. I am not shocked at some of the stupid comments from the forum members. I currently own a Sony HDR-FX1 but I am not sure if I want to use that for my upcoming project. I am new to this field and I want to get some really good quality pornography. I am almost 100% sure that everyone on the forum watches porn so I dont like the fact that porn is not accepted and looked upon as embarising. I plan to film in HD because I think that a sharp and clear shot is important. But how would I get the good details and not the bad? Would I need difussors or can this be taken care of in editing? thanks for the input guys, I will start filming next week. Any suggestions guys?

THANKS,

Actually there was a pretty good segment of HBO's "Real Sex" on exactly that.

We will be filming underwater for one of our future projects, but it will be little snippets inserted in the film.

Dude, they've already warned you once that it is MANDATORY that you use your real first and last name. They WILL delete your account if you do not follow this rule. Just FYI, you can do what you want, but they can and will do that. ;)

To me, there's nothing morally wrong with porn. Hell, it saved me from going nuts as a teenager and into my 20s in the pre-computer days.

What I can't figure out from a business standpoint is how it still flourishes, since every type of girl and guy in every conceivable situation with every conceivable type of body and in every conceivable combination(s) has already been shot.

Know what I mean? There's so much sameness to it that I can't understand how more productions keep getting made, and keep making money!

But I guess that it ISN'T all the same, since people's erotic tastes differ.

Hell, I've been married for 20 years, and at this stage, Joan Rivers is looking good to me.

"I greeted my husband at the door, totally naked and wrapped in Saran Wrap, and he said, 'What? Leftovers AGAIN!?' "

Hey Ira,

I'll take a stab at this if you can stand some armchair grade psychology, sociology and anthropology. It might help make a little more sense of what is arguably the most successful portion of the general movie industry.

Porn is for men. Women are such a small part of the consuming market that they often get their own kinds of porn and not that much of it. Since it is for men it, by its own design, can tell you what is important to men. Men are most interested in the actual physical act. Romance and seduction aren't important. In contrast, women's porn isn't that emphasized on the actual act. The circumstances under which seduction occur, the character dynamics of seduction or conquest, and the rank dynamics before, during and after the act seem to captivate women more. This is why romance novels are consumed more by women than by men.

Psychologist, sociologists and anthropologists have wondered about this. Now that porn is so prevalent it has become a legitimate area of concern and study. There have been a few theories thrown out that seem to be getting agreement and hold water. One theory that I have heard from a local anthropologist is that men are capable of watching other people in the act and demonstrating interest instead of disgust due to our social/cave design. The idea is that most of the males come home to the cave after a hunt and engage in reproductive acts with the females. The females are interested in maximizing their reproductive success by taking as many men as are interested. The men, then by necessity of design, must have the maximum interest in reproducing with any and all females. The idea in this theory is that men are designed to watch other males doing it with a female and then have an accelerated desire for that woman. Since we don't live in caves any more, porn replicates that experience. So strong is this design feature in men that this cave pattern is the fastest and surest method for awakening a male's reproductive machinery through moving pictures.

As far as women's preference for drama over action: Women already know what happens during sex. They seem more interested in all the social and interpersonal stuff surrounding the sex. Anthropologists have expressed the idea that cave women must acquire their protein wealth (meat for themselves and children) through men. Therefore, sex is more than a reproductive act, it is the device of acquiring more and better men (hunters and genetics). Of course, we don't live in caves anymore. But, we do still have all this natural design running around in us making decisions on our behalves. Little doubt of that.

I don't mean to gross anybody out. It's just that civilization improves its control by institutionally denying humans their nature. By harvesting the anxiety and energy of a society all sorts of amazing acts can be performed like war, conquest and industrialization. At the same time, societies don't want to implode into chaos by the same harvesting techniques. So, it provides replacative outlets for monitoring and regulating those anxieties. Hence, porn.

Have I psycho-babbled everyone enough, already?

Paul, this makes total sense to me, although there are probably other instincts that come into play is well.

And the key word here is "instinct," which I have always believed to be the case.

Because although we like to believe we're evolved and above the rest of the "animals" in the animal kingdom, we're really not at all.

A short guy like me couldn't do squat with the ladies like the tall guys did, and that's because the tall guys are STILL perceived as better physical protectors against predators, even though in in 2008, this means nothing.

And that's why so many women "change" their attitude toward their spouses after the kids are born:

Once he does his job making the kids, and based on the legal system and semi-guaranteed financial remuneration, they dump his ass.

He's simply not needed any more.

This as an amazingly complete denial of who and what we are.

I thank God I know where I came from. Where I am going... and why things are so terribly wrong...

If you choose to believe you are the product of Time + Matter + Chance... then why have any morals at all...?

You are not a cosmic mistake!.. though (because God is not a tyrant) you certainly have the freedom to believe so.

This thread is fast becoming more idiotic than it's title... if that could be possible...

This topic does seem to make you fidgety, David.

Given the market share porn commands within the overall industry, it can be argued that it is a reasonable topic for movie makers. Though, discussing it does readily awaken reactions not directly associated with movie making. May I ask that you allow us our perspectives on, at least, the movie making aspects of the issue?
