BEST CAMERA FOR PORN?

Recommended Posts

I tried to tell a good story to get things back on track. We can't seem to stay focused on a discussion about photographing naked women :)

I was really hoping we could move beyond moral and philosophical abstractions and talk about porn's relevancy to our industry and tools (and vica versa).

Next mention of morality or god gets this thread shut down.

Good call Matthew.

Take it to the Off-topic forum.

Thanks Nathan. I hope it gets used.

Anyway, I would work on a soft porn film (one without typical porn vulgarity). Maybe that's just because I'm a 17 year old desparate to prove myself in a film enviroment, or maybe it's because I consider these film to be a celebration of the human form, or how the simple act of reproduction has (to a level) has become an artform in itself. I can just imagine lighting for a soft silouette around the body, with coloured light to convey the emotion of the scene. Wonderful. :)

What I wouldn't do is work on a 'jugs, dick, and more jugs' type of film with no storyline, or any sort of artistic or cinematographical merit whatsoever, no matter how desparate I get to prove myself. Such films are absolutely repulisve in my view.

Anybody consider ranting about the topic Nathan has warned against please don't. Others are enjoying this thread for it's evolving topic of focus, and the merits of certain types of pornography. Please out of consideration use the thread I made, or even your own one. Just don't get this nice thread shut down.

-Best.

I wonder about that. Are porn producers "early adopters"? I remember some documentary, might have been on HBO, sometime in the late 1990's, about the porn industry and they showed quite a number of behind the scenes shots of the camera operators and gaffers, etc., and it seemed like everyone was shooting on Canon XL1 cameras.

How big do you think the camera market is in the porn industry? Do you think Canon, Panasonic and Sony have liaisons or separate sales reps specifically for the porn industry? Because it really is an "industry" after all, with it's own organizations, award shows, etc. And it does make billions of dollars a year.

Just wondering?

Best,

-Tim

Now unless God was experimenting with prototypes, or just didn't like Neanderthals and Homo erectus because they looked funny, .... As Einstein said, God does not play dice with the universe ....

The context for the Einstein line is that he didn't like Heisenberg's uncertainty principle. I don't know if he liked Heisenberg, either. Heisenberg stayed in Germany during the war, and was on their nuclear R&D team. But regarding uncertainty, Heisenberg was right, Einstein was wrong.

At least "Homo Erectus" does sort of sound like we're heading back on topic.... ;-)

God can't play dice. god would be divine if god existed (not saying one way or the other) but being god-- and by that definition all knowing-- god would know the outcome before the event! Talk about a great buddy to have in vegas with you!

As for porn. . . webcam is the new aesthetic I think. I think the reason for this is the interactivity of it. Just a thought, though, ya know (not being a porn aficionado). It serves dual purposes, though, relieves loneliness and lets anyone be a "director" of sorts. . .

Hmmm -- I always thought that the fundamental idea was to show very clearly things that are normally kept hidden. In that case, what the OP wants is lots of DOF, a close focus limit that's really close, and a zoom with a good wide end. Most any 2/3" HD camera would do, say an old clunker F-900 ....

I dunno> for me, I think pornography in a way might represent a fundamental human loneliness. Now of course I can't prove that in the least, but it seems to fit. This being the case, I would think an interactive environment, regardless of "quality" would be preferential. If you even look at pornography (online, and yes, I've had to in sexuality classes before) a lot of the angles are from the Perspective of the man being "serviced". . . It's just a thought. Perhaps pornography is meta morphing into two different fields, the interactive eventually leading out to "dirty holodecks" and the cinematic which will go on to be shot on D-Cinema systems with S4s. . who knows.

You know, as an older guy who grew up in the 60's and 70's, the porn we looked at was mostly Playboy and in the 1970's Penthouse. "Of course most of us claimed we were only buying them for the articles. ;) " Both magazines seemed to do pretty well, back in the day.

But now anyone who has access to the internet can see pictures that are far more explicit than anything that ever appeared in Playboy or Penthouse, and for free.

I'm not sure how folks make money at this. I realize that as far as internet porn is concerned, the web sites show certain free images in the hopes of enticing you to join their site (i.e. pay them money), but I wonder how many folks they actually get to do that. When so much explicit stuff is available for free, why would someone pay for it?

I also wonder if the internet, and all the "free samples" available there, is putting a damper in the Porn Video Store Market. When I lived in New York City in the 1990's, there was a little shop around the corner from my apartment that only sold VHS porn tapes. I wonder if places like that are in business anymore. Why would someone go through the social stigma of walking into a Porn Video Store, when they can view free samples on line, and if they want to buy porn, I assume they can do that on line as well, all in the privacy of their own home.

And is most of the porn that is produced today intended for the internet market? If so, then I would assume the porn industry is at the forefront of streaming video. So maybe the porn industry is furthering the development of multimedia technology.

More random thoughts to try to keep this thread going in the right direction.

Best,

-Tim

There are still porn video shops. . .there's a big one on the highway near my house!

Porn has been in the forefront of some multimedia developments in the past, streaming video as well (i forget where but there were articles on that, and DVD).

As for buying access, I'm sure the porn sites survive because of their low-overhead and possibly data-mining as well (selling user names, e mails, etc).

As for the free samples etc; it's a teaser, like at the grocery store; the clips are very short (10-60 seconds, and low quality. YOu pay for longer clips, downloads etc. . .. . Ahh anthropology classes, you taught me so much!)

Unfortunately, there are those 'intellectually weak' individual(s) who inevitably and predictably resort to their last ditch effort..."when you don't like the message... attack the messenger". No doubt most see through their feeble minded ruse.

Now those are personal attacks. Your "message" has no place here, and neither do the attacks. And I'm starting to think that you shouldn't be here either.

Do it Nathan!... Do what you said you would do...!

Brad, your bias has blinded you. Do yourself a favor.... re-read Mr. Humber's post.

Shut is down Nathan.. just like you said you would do. We are all watching....

Curious that two of the people in the 'meat' of the discussion (John Sprung and myself) walk away as mutual friends with respect fro each other.. while you Brad, weren't really engaged in the discussion but blew in angry and are angry today. You would ban me in a heart beat right? You might want to take a look at your bias pal.... as I only responded to what others were posting... at least 10 to 1.. but BOY you sure feel threatened by that ONE... Mr. Humber nailed it.. set the rules.. and enforce them.. EVENLY. Now, I just wanted to get that in before this thread is shut down... as stated.

Waiting... Nathen....

Just got an Im from 'nathan'.. thought I'd share it:

That statement was really aimed at you specifically.

You're the one who kept diverting the conversation and crashing the thread, anyone else were people who were not mature enough to hold their tongues (or hands) when arguing religion in a public forum.

Either way, that's not the point or subject of the forum and most people have moved it to the off-topic section of the forum.

A few interesting posts have popped up and will continue as the echos from the religious meta-conversation fade away.

See what is happening here? He is impotent (no pun intended). Not a Man of his word... a man not worth any regard. You have no idea the loss of respect people are seeing in your actions.. for you.. and this forum...

There you go folks.... the rules are meaningless.. it is anarchy!

I believe the echos and 'gotchas' from the religion/morals meta-conversation are rippling away as the more responsible members of the forum quit participating in the hijack of the thread and move to the off-topic section of the site.

I'd also like to point out that these pages are index-able and search-able by Google and other search engines and as we use (hopefully) real names and foster real reputations here, it would be good to remember that possible employers may search your name and find it deep in a flame war. Regardless of the context or side of the issue you fall on, I'm sure you don't want to bee seen as argumentative by any director/studio/producer/school who Googles for your work.... forever.

We've had several good posts and I think this thread can be saved :)

Move it along... nothing to see here...

Ya .. move it along... don't see how weak I am.. that my word is meaningless... pay no attention...

Nathan, I speak the truth without fear.. you on the other hand.. well.. your words and lack of follow up speak volumes. Remember.. these are searchable by Google and any future employer may see the weakness in your leadership

There is no point in trying to pick a fight, David. This isn't that type of forum. :)

You obviously want this thread to end, you jumped on my threat to do so and now you're trying to goad me in to it.

If you don't like the subject matter of the thread, pick another to contribute to.

..yet.. the thread continues.....

I have lost all respect for this forum.. for those who indulge in this pathetic, childish discussion as to what is the best camera to shoot porn(?)... you have demeaned yourselves.. and your profession.. as if most of you are actually participants in this profession.. and you think of yourselves as professionals?.. as craftsmen worthy of respect?.... remember, this is all searchable by Google. I have also lost respect for those who sit on the sidelines as cheerleaders and not get off the sidelines and join the discussion.

I am out. I have three shows to prep and this forum, obviously being a joke, is rendered meaningless.

Next stop My Controls to try to shut down my account.. if there is anything I missed, I am sure Brad will gladly delete.

Fade to black.

I'm afraid our David "doth protest too much". After reading his ranting and claims of being such a professional hardworking cinematographer, I thought I would check out his IMDB page, as he has it listed in his signature. Here is one of his credits:

Playboy Video Centerfold: Playmate of the Year Julie Lynn Cialini (1996) (V) (key grip) (as Dave Rakoczy)

So as we all sit around talking about what camera to use to shoot porn, it seems like Mr. "Holier than Thou" has actual experience on the subject.

So David, what camera did your production use to shoot the Playboy Video Centerfolds? Or don't you consider that porn? Or maybe was this before you were "born again"?

Why does it seem that those who preach the most, are the biggest hypocrites.

I am very disappointed in you David. Shame, Shame, Shame.

Best,

-Tim
