Workshops

Recommended Posts

I'm a writer/director and I'd like to attend an extended workshop with other filmmakers. I'd like this to be specifically craft/art oriented as opposed to industry oriented. For example, I regularly attend ifp's producer series here in Chicago. After two weekends of that it's always inspiring - new ideas of raising funds, new friendships etc... I'd like the same fulfillment as an artist.

Any festivals that seem especially relevant? Conferences? Week long schools or workshops?

thanks,

Schmüdde

Since no one has chimed in here, I'm going to ask that if you find any good ones, please share. Personally, I've never had any luck outside the University system.

Will do. I have absolutely the same experience as you do. Outside of film festivals and ifp events there doesn't seem to be much. Film festivals are great - but they aren't catered to artistic development.

Cheers,

Schmüdde

Since I've been asked to share what I find... I'll keep updating as I stumble upon things. I hope some people find this useful:

IFP Narrative Lab seems to be really cool if you have a feature in post. Currently I'm finishing up a short 35mm film so I don't qualify, but if you do, you should apply. It looks really cool:

More retreats and workshops for filmmakers to hone their skills:

I'm not endorsing any of these - still just compiling a list of non-academic or directly festival-related regular workshops around the USA. If anybody had an experience with these or more to add - please chime in!

Cheers,

Schmüdde

I'm going to keep bumping this until people say they don't want this resource. Here's Project: Involve: http://www.filmindependent.org/labs-and-programs/project-involve/

Project:Involve is Film Independent’s signature diversity program, dedicated to increasing diversity in the film industry by cultivating the careers of under-represented filmmakers. The program, which runs from October through June, selects filmmakers from diverse backgrounds and filmmaking tracks. During the nine-months, the Fellows are paired one-on-one with a mentor from the film industry, assigned to a team to make a short film incorporating a given theme, and attend monthly filmmaking workshops and other educational seminars.

Hope this helps!
