Anamorphic Movies

I'd still call that Elephant Man shot heavily designed and dressed for the format.

 

Don't get me wrong by the way, I never said that I think anamorphic photography cannot work for a location shoot, just a visually uncoordinated shoot.

 

Ultimately, I do agree with you on the dead space argument for composition in terms of punctuating moments, but I think you could use the same argument for justifying a whole film shot in close up.

 

I guess we can agree to disagree on this (especially when you measure up how many anamorphic films I have shot compared to you ;) ).

One thing I remembered as a kid watching Alien was just before the "birthing scene" a couple of strange out of focus blobs and silhouettes suddenly were thrown on the screen:

They seemed out of place and there was no other hint that anything horrifying was about to happen within the next few seconds so I've often wondered if that was subtle foreshadowing or just accidental.
