High speed cam suggestions?

Hi everybody -

I'm planning a slo-mo shot of a firework explosion (one firework, maybe 10-30 seconds total real-time), and I'm wondering if anyone might have suggestions for cameras. I've looked into renting the Phantom HD Gold from Abel's, which can run at about 1000 fps in 1080p - around the max speed we would want - but it's very expensive and also requires a licensed operator. It's not necessarily outside of the budget, but it's pushing it.

Right now, we're not set on displaying in 1080p - in fact, we may even display on DVD - so I'm wondering if there might be alternative high speed cameras for less money out there (with less resolution - 720, 480...)? We would still want to keep the frame-rate between 500 and 1000 fps.

I've considered shooting on 16mm using a Hycam, but that may become more of a headache than it's worth. It's a live event and we've only got one chance to get it right.

thanks,

Tyler

Just finished up working on a set of Jet Engine tests ($2.2M shoot) with Hycam's with new 500T SO-19 (7219) cameras at a T4 or T5.6 incredible imagery totally bulletproof. It is a inexpensive option a camera house will practically give you the camera so it is just film costs.

There is no real time finder so you have to setup the shot before shooting but at 1000fps a 400' roll gets you about 16 seconds of run time.

Not the best solution for everything, you would not want to hand hold it (not really even possible) but cheap and good.

Looks good, Olex, but I'm not sure where I'd get one in the UK.

You can get a Miro4 from Abel as well. 800x600 resolution with a frame rate up to 1265fps. Only $1200/day and no Phantom Tech required (but suggested).

What do think to the Miros Mitch? I used one (see some shots here http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/nature/sites/sp...ed_kites.shtml) and didn't think it looked that great, very pixelated, colours not great. Maybe I was doing something wrong. Good effect at 600fps though!
