Why isn't the industry more represented?

However, it is very common for white males to portray the "self-made man" idea which everyone knows is a crock. You are entitled to your opinion, however delusional it may be.

I give credit to Barrack Obama for getting where he is today mostly as a result of this own intelligence, hard work, and talent.

And actually every one doesn't know that the idea of the "self made" white male is a crock, I didn't know that. Is there any other white male on the forum who didn't know that or am I the only one?

I guess if I had chosen to be a drug addict and bank robber I could of been just as successful. After all since my personal choices have no impact on my success in life Matthew, I could be a drug addict and bank robber and simply rely on luck and timing to be successful in the film industry. Which by the way I am not successful in, until the public says I am.

This also shows your lack of insight into reality. Barack Obama owes more to Oprah Winfrey and the public's sense of intrigue with a "historical black president" than to any actual previous achievements of Barack Obama. When you think of it, what had he actually done of significance before running for president? And when I ask this, I mean "what MORE had he done than any typical presidential candidate?" Most people would concede that he was actually rather inexperienced for the job.

All I'll say in terms of crew diversity is this-- I have a hispanic 1AD I love, a female 1AC I beg borrow and steal to keep with me on sets (even out of my own pay if need be) a Jewish PA cum director (now) who I'm working with who is a simple pleasure, and I've done a fair share of R&B type videos; as well as working with an all Korean speaking cast/crew (that was interesting). To me, they're all people. Now, the people who are working in a specific industry will never represent the nation as a whole because for a long long long time there have been notions of what is appropriate work for your sex/race/creed and what isn't. Slowly, that is changing, but it's a painfully slow process, and the roots of inequality, I think, are based in a history which is all to hare to slough off. That being said, I personally think that with enough stubbornness and a good deal of luck anyone can get anywhere they want. But the key is to make sure you're too naive to ever let the odds get to you, and lucky enough to have people around you who want you to succeed in what you do (as well as lucky enough to meet people who can help you to that end). As for the representation in Hollywood-- well I can't speak to that, I haven't yet made that move. What I can say is that in my, admittedly limited experience, there is diversity in film, but like most of life, the statistics of the world won't really mesh up a subset of that life. And, everything is so geographically based and dependent on so many societal structure and inherent culture and direct correlations are hard to come by (god, reliving so many of my Anthropology BS (and i use the term in both ways) classes right now.)

(excuse the rant, I am currently slightly under the influence of too much time on my hands and a Budweiser. )

You my friend have become one of the most impossible people on the forum!

No point in continuing any dialogue with you, why did I bother in the first place?

Heaven forbid you should ever actually have any success in this business, I will be FIRST in line to point out to you that you did it by sheer dumb luck and only happened to be in the right place at the right time.

Unfortunately I believe my opportunity to say this to you will never materialize as there is zero chance of you having any success in this business. Since you walk around with such a giant chip on your shoulder always resentful of every one else's success, & believing that you are far more deserving than they are.

Hmmm -- Remember the "Peter Principle"? His theory is that if you do well at something, you get promoted. Then you get promoted again and again until they find something for you to do that you're no damn good at. And that's where you stay for the rest of your career.

R,

Amazing that I have the chip on my shoulder? I'm actually the one promoting a more humble and grounded attitude and realizing that success takes help and fortune along with talent and effort. It is you that goes around on this forum talking about your expensive cars that you own or will own and whatnot.

One thing about the industry that already concerns me is the amount of pride and ego that is present is so many individuals. I guess this could be true of any industry however. But humility and groupwork and acknowledging others seems to take a back seat to self-glorifying yourself and your preceived achievements. Take Peter Jackson, for instance. I don't know what kind of guy he is but his pinnacle has thus far been LOTR. How far would he have gotten with no help from anyone and without New Line's cash to make the masterpiece. He is not self-made. Also, no matter how talented someone might be, not everyone would get New Line to turn over a $300m budget to and you know it.

I'm merely pointing out that Hollywood does tend to have somewhat of an agenda at times. For example, the "pro-homosexual" movies tend to be made in larger volumes despite that idea still not being a dominating social thought. If it were a dominate thought then gay marriage bans would not be so prevelant.

Although I really need to find a better way to pass time between jobs I gotta say I love watching these train smashes...

The gay movies comment Matthew, the gay movies comment ...

I thought I already clarified that when I mentioned that Homosexuals are portrayed in a more positive manner onscreen than Christians and that Christians are generally (though not always) portrayed as intolerant, hypocritical, and racist, etc.

As far as movies made that are gay themed, here are some of the more known:

-Milk

-Philadelphia

-Brokeback Mountain

-The Birdcage

-The Rocky Horror Picture Show

-The Crying Game

-Boys don't Cry

-Girls will be girls

-Connie and Carla

-Kissing Jessica Stein

There are more and I can reference those for you if you can't find them yourself.

Oh I know what you mean, that scene in Brokeback Mountain where the two gay cowboys bust into the Christian church and start beating every one up, smashing windows, and burning Bibles, was very disturbing.

I'm just curious if anyone has any ideas or insight into why the film industry, particularly in the areas of the crew, are not more representative of the population as a whole?

I'm pretty sure the most insightful ideas were submitted in the first twenty or so posts in this thread.

Let's wrap this up, please.

I think we're done Tim, way past 16 posts. I guess I'll avoid the casino this weekend.
