best way to record sound on a low budget?

Hello everyone

 

I bought myself the 7D a couple of months ago and started to use it for the shorts I'm shooting. The only problem, as all of you probably know, is the audio.

 

A buddy of mine recently told me about the ZOOM H4N. I checked it out over the internet but thought I would ask people who understand something about that before I spend that kind of money.

 

It would be great if you guys could share some of your thoughts on this.

Double system sound is best. It's more complicated, usually requires slates (see current thread in "Assistant Cameraman" sub-forum ( Slating ), and more crew but is well worth the effort.

 

 

I always recommend reading Tomlinson Holman's "Sound for Film and Television" as a first point in learning how to record professional quality sound. His initials are the "TH" in THX, he developed the system.

 

I'm now using the new Sound Devices USB Pre 2 outboard sound card with a netbook and Sound Forge Studio for recording. It's working extremely well. Not cheap but still more than $1,000 less than a standalone Sound Devices or Nagra professional digital recorder
