Modifying Widescreen in Post.

I was looking up on the Sony PD170 and in a review is says that it can shoot on widescreen, but when you play the footage on an standard TV 4:3 ration the image will be stretched.

 

I was wondering if there was a way in post-production you could modify the widescreen image so it will also look acceptable on a standard TV.
