Extreme CU to CU: advice

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I'm about to assist on a project where the DP and director want a shot where they'll start with an extreme close-up of an eye and end in a close-up of the character. I'd like to know what the best option for this type of shot would be:

1) use a long zoom combined with a diopter and zoom out

2) use a prime with a diopter and travel out. keeping things in focus will be challenging to say the least

3) use a macro lens with a diopter and travel out. again, focus

We're aware that the actress will have to be lit to a deep stop if we're going to travel, and that we're likely to cast shadows from us/the camera on her face. A headbrace will also be used.

Since this is a student film, budget is a consideration.

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated!

You'll probably want to bury a zoom out during the dolly move back though of course it could all be done with a zoom or all done on a dolly, it's just that you'll need to use a 100mm macro and will start very close to the face if you do it all on a dolly.

With a buried zoom its a bit easier, you start at minimum distance for the zoom and zoom into the eye, you will be well over 200mm at the start, or use a +1 diopter if you want to start a bit closer.
