Freya Black
You have $16 million canadian dollars to make a sci-fi movie. Do you: 1) Make a somewhat by the numbers Alien rip off. 2) Make an intelligent and groundbreaking sci-fi movie. 3) Make a sci-fi movie featuring Giant Robots. 4) Make a worthy sci-fi movie influenced by classic soviet sci-fi 5) Make a sci-fi movie, a lot like alien, only replacing Xenomorphs with kick ass zombies instead. 6) Make a sci-fi movie featuring a farmer who wants to be an astronaut. 7) Make a sci-fi movie influenced by the best of David Cronenberg 8) Make a sci-fi movie about the nature of reality. 9) Make a sci-fi movie dealing with time travel and a complicated looping narrative 10) Make a sci-fi fantasy movie with some well respected actors from long ago and featuring a couple of friendly robots battling against the forces of evil. Theres no right answer but one of these options strikes me as being especially lame even compared to the other options. Freya

James Steven Beverly
You hire me to make "The Black Sky", a dark, textured sci-fi space script I wrote a few years ago that will knock your socks off. :D BTW, the lamest option you listed is the "Giant Robot" one Edited January 12, 2014 by James Steven Beverly

James Steven Beverly
The more interesting question is which would be the most challenging one to make well, again, I'd go with 'Giant Robots' though trying to out Cronenberg, Cronenberg would be hard to do. That guy's mind in unlike anyone's I've ever experienced, which means dark, disturbing and extremely cool!
Freya Black
I can understand why people would consider giant robots to be the lamest option. Having said that I could also understand why people might think it was actually a great idea to make a movie with Giant Robots in it. After all the Transformers movies pull in loads of money and they are really quite awful. But then Pacific Rim fell like a bomb. It probably doesn't help that the title sounds like a gay porn film however. I did make it difficult by including some very lame suggestions but I personally think the worst idea is making an Alien rip off and then replacing the aliens with zombies. Freya Black
and I don't want to just give the Canadians a hard time because you know what... ...theres a version of the same movie made in this part of the world too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rjcDSIPzQY I guess because it was such a great idea. I imagine this version was made on a very tiny budget tho compared to the $16 million of Colony. It has some nice sets tho. Personally I can't get my head around why anyone would make such a movie. I mean youtube is already cluttered with people with unsold zombie movies they just want to show people. Zombies aren't really in short supply and World War Z wasn't exactly a massive success either. Come to think of it, R.I.P.D. bombed too. Maybe these movies have been in development a long time however. I do find it a bit mind boggling. Premium Member Keith Walters Posted January 13, 2014 Premium Member Share Posted January 13, 2014 What are you referring to here exactly? R, I have an idea for you. Suppose some mad Canadian Scientist develops some sort of brian-boosting "dragon" serum and uses it to create a large red dog with the intelligence of say, Sylvester Stallone, and uses him to carry out some dastardly plot contrary to truth, Justice and the Canadian Club, er Way.... His large breasted blonde assistant Brunhilda discovers what he has done and manages to steal some of the serum, but only enough for her lovable Daschund Alexa. So basically she has to try to save Canada (and prob'ly the rest of the world) aided only by two adorable children and the equally adorable Alexa. You could call it "Dragon vs Alexa" All right! I'm going, I'm going.... Sheesh! You don't have to get physical about it....
Matthew Parnell
Shoot it all on an iphone, call it minimalist and retire to an island somewhere with your 'producers fee'. Edited January 13, 2014 by Matthew Parnell
Guest
Ok so back to my original question, you're referring to The Colony? That's what this thread is about? BTW, Last Days On Mars is the feature debut of forum member Ruairi Robinson. Support it. I would like to be able to see it. R,

R, Well I've just posted the trailer for it! :) I'm a bit amazed that The Colony could have cost $16 million! Sci-fi zombies seems like a low budget idea at the best of times. If I didn't know they had $16 million I would have guessed that they chose zombie people because it's cheaper in the special effects department. Premium Member Stephen Williams Posted January 13, 2014 Premium Member Share Posted January 13, 2014 What are you referring to here exactly? R, I assume the real answer is make the film for 3 million & pocket 13 million :D
Freya Black
I assume the real answer is make the film for 3 million & pocket 13 million :D Sounds about right if you can pull it off! Maybe 6 million and 7 for keeps if they have to pay Laurence a few million to appear. Might take some real jedi accounting to pull off tho. Having said that "Return of the Jedi" has apparently still not broken into profit decades later so the jedi accountants are out there.
