Saba Mazloum
Hey guys, Im about to shoot a feature film using anamorphic lens on the alexa XT 4:3, my director is asking me what are our options for IMAX release, and what would happen to our frame size etc? Anyone have experience with this? thanks!
Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted March 18, 2014 Premium Member Share Posted March 18, 2014 You'd have to letterbox the image on an IMAX screen.
David Cunningham
I'm not sure why you would want to do an Anamorphic IMAX release from an Alexa XT. It's only 2K to start with... then minus the Anamorphic Squeeze, your actual resolution is gaining nothing by an IMAX release vs an every-day 2K digital theater release. Is there a reason you're trying to do this?
David Cunningham
IMAX is 15 perf 70mm film. This would be like shooting a feature on anamorphic Super 8 for release on 35mm anamorphic print. Actually... probably more extreme than that.
Sean Cunningham
Most digital IMAX projection is, ironically, 2K. Edited March 18, 2014 by Sean Cunningham
David Cunningham
I know they call that IMAX... but it's not. It's IMAX branded... but it's not true IMAX. The only thing that might be "true" IMAX (maybe) is the IMAX 3-D done with 2 2K projectors.
Sean Cunningham
Yeah, I'm not saying I agree with how they're misleading the public, it's just that very little of what's shown at non-educational venues is really IMAX or even 65mm origination. Some don't even have size going for them but just the IMAX rated 2K digital projectors. I wonder what Trumbull has to say about 2K being branded "IMAX" these days.
