Who handles crew hiring?

If I have a camera and grip and lighting crew I want to work with who handles negotiating the rates for them and making sure they're confirmed for the days at hand?


Also does anyone have a guide or checklist for pre-production for the cinematographer for projects. I often find myself messing things up on the organizational timeline end of that.

The line producer or UPM handles hiring and deals, rates, etc. since they control the budget. Best Boys often keep track of extra man days for the Keys and making sure people know the days but do not do the actual hiring. As a DP, you generally tell the producer the Key Grip and Gaffer you want to hire and let them negotiate their rates with the producer, and then between them, they figure out the crew and their rates.
