Colombia - safe?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I've been asked to go to Colombia. Five day trip, government-sponsored organisation, to Bogotá, Medellín and Cartagena.

I am aware that the country cannot be considered entirely safe, and there have been kidnappings and ransoms, and there is organised crime connected to the drug trade in certain areas. The UK government advises against travel to certain parts of the country, but not to the proposed destinations. As such, I'm minded to do it, assuming cautious behaviour and a healthy attitude to remaining well on the beaten track. Whole thing is likely to be escorted.

Anyone been there? Any experiences gratefully received.

Keep yourself to yourself; don't get involved in things, and just basically don't do anything too stupid (like carrying a of money or flashy/touristy things.)

A little adventure is always fun.

Yeah, I have a good Colombian friend. I get the impression it's generally safe as London say - but there are places you may as well avoid... Are you traveling alone?

I spent two weeks in Colombia a year ago - mostly in Bogota. It is certainly a place to keep your wits about you, particularly after dark. It was pretty active at night, but I saw a few street fights just walking around the neighborhood I was staying in. It's certainly more dicey than London, but if you're smart you should be just fine. It was a beautiful city with terrific food. It is quite difficult to get around using English, so just keep that in mind. And just like Europe, watch out for your stuff and watch for pickpockets! My friend had his iPhone stolen from his pocket by a woman on a crowded street tram. I never had any problems during the daytime.

Hi folks,

Thanks for the info. It is, as far as I know, a group tour, and I'd have no intention of going for an after-dark walk to the less salubrious parts of town, so I think it'll be fine.

Otherwise, it's dummy wallet time!

Make sure that Union Jack is clearly displayed. The problem with being British, Canadian, or Australian is that we get mistaken for Americans at a distance. And as we all know, our American friends are loved the world over. :D
