Premium Member Satsuki Murashige Posted May 21, 2015 Premium Member Share Posted May 21, 2015 Not sure the world really needs a sequel to 'Blade Runner' but good to know it's in good hands, cinematography-wise. I thought the recent 'Ex Machina' worked as a great unofficial prequel to 'BR'. What a great film!
Jaan Shenberger
A little off topic, but I recently watched the director's cut of Legend on blu-ray (transferred from an answer print)… I was shocked to feel that it's visually and atmospherically on par with Blade Runner. Lighting and production design are really superb. The theatrical cut is pretty bad though… no wonder it's been largely forgotten.
Premium Member Bill DiPietra Posted May 21, 2015 Premium Member Share Posted May 21, 2015 Not sure the world really needs a sequel to 'Blade Runner'... It absolutely does not. One of the main reasons its remained such a classic is because of all of the philosophical questions it leaves the viewer to ponder.
Mark Dunn
Nor did we need a po-faced remake of Robocop, just another dumb shoot-em-up. The point was that Robocop was a clever shoot-em-up. Not that I've seen it, I haven't been to the pictures since Casino Royale and can you blame me? (No, not the one with Woody Allen). JD Hartman
Can't possibly turn out worse than the remake of Total Recall.
Leon Liang
I guess most of us are only seeing it because of Roger Deakins. Which is quite a sufficient reason in itself.
John E Clark
I'm in the 'nothing is sacred' camp. To be sure, some remakes don't measure up to either 'original' or even current standards... but I don't think that's a reason not to redo something. At the moment, "Fury Road"(2015) is doing well, and receiving an IMDB 8.8 rating. I've not seen it, that's this weekends activity I think. Then again it is not an actual 'remake'... but 'another story' in that Mad Max world. Edited May 21, 2015 by John E Clark
Freya Black
Roger Deakins may mean that it will be shot on the Alexa and I'm not sure if that will work but I guess we will find out.

No offense to Roger Deakins, but after seeing the original projected on 35mm in Cinerama...nothing can beat that.

Robin R Probyn
Second Godfather was as good or better than the first.. and the second star wars was better than first.. BUT then they both went to soup in a basket ..

BUT then they both went to soup in a basket .. But they're saying that Harrison Ford is appearing in this, which defeats the purpose of the questions asked in the original. That didn't happen in Godfather or Star Wars.
Giray Izcan
You never know. He shot the last Cohen Brothers movie on 35mm. He might do the same with this one as well.

It would be interesting to see him not only use 35mm but also shoot in anamorphic - the anamorphic flares had a significant effect in the original. I know but Blade Runner is a very different project and a very high bar was set by the original movie. I'm sure Mr Dearkins will do great work, I just don't think the Alexa is up to the job. Chris Burke
Hollywood can't really do much but sequels and reboots. Perhaps I am a pariah, but I am not a big fan of Roger Deakins. Everyone celebrates him, but he just doesn't grab me the way he does many. In terms of cinematography, my tastes are wide from Maya Deren to Freddie Francis, but roger doesn't do anything for me. To be honest, if someone else was going to shoot it, I would be more excited about watching this film. As it has been said already in this thread, nothing is sacred. Isn't that a huge problem? Leon Liang
Why.. we can find out if he's human or robot.. that was the question nes par.. ? The point was that we don't find out, and that ambiguity was one of the themes of the film. The sequel would pretty much ruin it.

Leon Liang
No, Denis Villenevue is. He also directed 'Prisoners' and 'Sicario', which were both shot by Deakins.
