Joachim Glaser
A friend of mine had a shoot in China recently in the Longyou Caves. He was shooting on the 5D mk III with L series lenses. He shot ntsc for a show that is broadcast in the U.S. When the footage came back there was pretty bad flicker. The cave was dimly lit and there were 3 different types of lights in the cave (by his estimate). Definitely some floros, he's not sure what the other 2 were. He may have to go back and reshoot all the footage and we're trying to figure out if he should be shooting PAL and what shutter degree he should be shooting at. And if there's maybe a better dslr to use (he has to appear to be a tourist). Any thoughts or ideas?
Brian Drysdale
I gather Chinese power is generally 50Hz, so 25fps or a 1/100 shutter shooting the NTSC formats should do the job. 25fps sounds like the job for low light.
Robin R Probyn
China is a PAL country.. but NTSC (60i/23.98/29-97) with 1/100 th shutter (instead of 1/60th).. should get rid of flicker.. but if they are phosphorus lights,or run off a generator etc..plenty of dodgy wiring in China.. they might flicker anyway.. but usually you would see it in the VF..? or playback .. What about using a Sony FS7.. with out all the add ons .. looks like a pro sumer camera.. although its actually a very good camera .. Joachim Glaser
Thanks for the advice. Also, the fs7 is a good idea, I'll mention that to him.
