Ron Dexter has a deep, informative site on learning cinematography. I'm just digging into it and it has a ton of great stuff.

 

Lights - I used clip on lights, white boards and mirrors for years as a film student. Start cheap and spend your money elsewhere.

 

Cameras - Film & Video Services has used K3's, Bolexes and Filmos for sale, somewhat pricier than eBay, but Gary can show you how to load them and you can take them back if they don't work. They also sell projectors, editing supplies, and film.

 

Old cameras generally require a little maintenance to keep them running well, but if you can spell "oil" and know how to operate a 3-in-1 can, you have most the skills needed to keep an old Filmo going.
