What is 'camera with a clam shell'?

In "cinematography for directors" book (page 61), it is mentioned that Darren Aronofsky stand right next to the camera with a clam shell. Also mentioned, "Alejandro will be right behind the camera with a clamshell." What does clam shell means?

I think they're referring to the portable video recorder/monitor, which opens up like a clamshell with a Hi-8/DV deck inside.

 

Back in the day, video taps off the film camera would run directly to one of these units and a lot of times, it was the only way of monitoring a shot outside of looking through the viewfinder of the camera. It would allow instant replay as well, which was awesome.
