Andrew Russo
There is an in camera lens wobble practical effect in the remake music video of this Joan Jett song for the movie Wayne's World 2 circa 1993. Any ideas how they achieved it? Look around: 0:05-0:06 0:55-0:56 1:11-1:12 - (probably the most visible example) Thanks! -Andrew
Premium Member Adrian Sierkowski Posted September 9, 2015 Premium Member Share Posted September 9, 2015 I think there used to be a system called the Mezmerizer or something to that effect from Panavision. Been awhile and can't seem to find much on it at present moment.
Premium Member Adrian Sierkowski Posted September 9, 2015 Premium Member Share Posted September 9, 2015 Also I think the Fraizer Lens System could in theory accomplish something similar as you can rotate the image in the "tube" basically-- if memory serves right. Premium Member Adrian Sierkowski Posted September 9, 2015 Premium Member Share Posted September 9, 2015 My mistake I was thinking of the Hylen system-- though I wonder if it could do something similar.
Nate Weaver
My guess is they did this in telecine. I only think this because there are other telecine fx going on such as the overscan/deysync, but most of all they saved the stretch/rotate for the wider shots that could be put anywhere in an edit. I could be wrong. Clairmont has/had a rig they called the "Squishy Lens", but I don't think it could get this particular distortion. But it would have been easy on DaVinci. There were a couple distortion lens setups towards the end of the 90s, Clairmont's and the Hylen, but hard to tell which particular one would have been capable of this particular distortion. Lance Soltys
I know I used something called a mesmerizer back in the early 90's on a commercial. My understanding was that it was a re-housed anamorphic lens that mounted in front of the camera lens. I don't remember who made it though. Freya Black
I have to say that the Joan Jett video just looks like someone rotating an anamorphic adaptor in front of the prime lens to me. Certainly I think that would be the easiest way to do it. Freya Edited September 10, 2015 by Freya Black

Freya That's exactly what a Mesmerizer is! :)
Alex Nelson
Kish Optics made the Mesmerizer. There was a front attachment for small primes and a rear attachment for zooms. Both had rotating cylinder lenses to accomplish that effect.
Shawn Martin
At least one of the Lord of the Rings movies - I can't remember which - had this same mesmerizer effect.
