davide sorasio
Hi guys, I was wondering if any of you could share any tips on how to pull focus on hand held shots. do you have a particular workflow? I feel confident with dolly shots but handheld sometimes still gives me some issues. Thanks so much in advance for the help!
Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted November 13, 2015 Premium Member Share Posted November 13, 2015 These days an AC is likely to use a remote focus device for handheld shots.
Cem Ali
If you don't have a wireless focus device, you should use a whip as not to disturb the operator. At the same time while doing that, try not to cast any shadows by standing in front of a light. Learn the distances of your arms lenght from camera to actor. Learn to guess the different lenghts from camera to the actor. Don't let peaking deceive you as it is not to be reliable below 75 mm. That's about it. Lastly get to enjoy coming out of focus to in focus shots Regards
Moe Hissi
Using a Whip would be the best thing you can do if a wireless unit is not available. i usually ask for a rehearsal shot so i can mark distances so i can be able to calculate the distance once we start rolling because usually actors tend to change position. Peaking has let me down many times so i trained my self to be able to tell an approximate distance with my eyes.
