 What do you think I can get an XL1S at a great price from a buddy for around $1700 or should I get the DVX100A which I'll have to spend double that I have been looking at the DVX100A pretty hard. What do you think?

For this exercise forget about any extras or what nots and just focus on the cameras themselves. :o

$1700 for an XL1s is a pretty good price. I like the XL1s better than the DVX100A, but I think you will find that most others will prefer the Panasonic to the Canon mainly because of its ability to shoot 24P. I just prefer the look of Canon's footage to that of Panasonic's.

in my experience the xl1s is no where near as sharp as the dvx.

I would catagorize the image as soft and mushy.

the xl2 on the other hand...

Depends on what lens you're using. The standard 16x lens- yes. The manual 14x and 16x are much sharper.

The 16x manual is awesome, but it is not as sharp as the DVX100 no matter which lens is used.

- edit -

xl1s: better lens

Dvx100: better image
