anamorphic bokeh-different?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I had an opportunity to watch The Taking of Pelham One Two Three(1974).

My understating is that anamorphic lenses could output egg, oval, round shaped bokeh.

Is the bokeh in the pic is different?

Could someone share your knowledge?

Out of focus highlights can also be shaped by other objects in front of the lens. This is most obviously seen in specially shaped waterhouse stops in special effect lenses, but also happens when there is sufficiently defocused object between the light source and the lens.

That's a classic oval bokeh from front-element anamorphic prime lenses. Some anamorphic lenses have a more pill-shape like this rather that a perfect rounded oval to out-of-focus lights.
