dual citizenship for work?

Does applying for dual citizenship for Canada / US work for obtaining jobs in the film industry? I've recently contacted a production company I would love to work with who are based in Canada. The gentleman was nice enough to point out that to work for them (and at all in Canada for that matter) that I would need to be a Canadian resident for a minimum of 2 years before they'd hire me.

There are a lot of production companies in Canada that make the types of films I want to be involved in (science & natural history). I'm mainly interested in camera, but would do just about anything to be involved in this type of programming.

I'm sitting here on the shore of Lake Erie looking at the nice green grass on the other side :D Any experiences? comments? ideas?

Thanks so much!

I assume you know that usually Canadians move to the USA, not the other way around.

Check the gov't of Canada web site for immigration, you would become a landed immigrant first. Which is the equivalent of a permanent resident in the USA.

As a landed immigrant you can live and work in Canada freely, no need to become a Canadian citizen.

Good grief do you really want to learn the Canadian national anthem and swear allegiance to the queen of England?

Hi,

> swear allegiance to the queen of England?

You make people do that?

Christ, we don't even make people do that.

I do rather like it when countries impose requirements on immigrants they don't make of their natural citizens...

Of course I'm from the UK so I don't really care.

Americans however.......they fought that war and all.

Georgie, as in Bush?

Well we've had a wave of American "refugees" come to Canada lately in search of the socialist dream.

What do we do with the scads of American military folk coming here who refuse to fight in Iraq?

It used to just be the draft dodgers, now it's people actually IN the US military. The US gov't does not want to release the figures, and the Canadian gov't being the good lap dog they are don't want to either.

And you guys actually take them?

I thought that you got sick of that after the Vietnam draft dodger exodus and said "no more".

Hmmm, we get Michael J. Fox, Peter Jennings, John Candy (RIP), and you get a bunch of draft dodgers.

Doesn't seem like a fair exchange... or maybe it is!

The current Canadian gov't knuclke heads oppose the Iraq war so they feel it's quite a coup to get "defecting" US soldiers into the country.

But they are smart enough to know they should not laud it over George W, especially since 80% of every thing Canada exports goes to the USA.

The first soldier had his immigration hearing and the judge ordered him back to the USA. Of course he's apealing, now he works as a plumber in Toronto.

But there are many more in Canada right now, neither side will say exactly how many. Most are hiding out with relatives on this side of the border.

My guess is they'll never be able to go home unless they want to be court martialled for being a deserter, OUCH!

I've visited Wilno - one of those small towns made up of lots of draft dodgers. Lots of neat people there (not to mention wolves).

And it's nice & quiet.

I'm no soldier... I just want a job :D

Thanks for the advice & conversation.
