Maximilian Sándor Lakner
Hi, I was biking home today after watching Finding Dory, going uptown on first avenue in Manhattan, and I always love the "effect" I was experiencing, and I often become away of it after going to a movie - where all the streetlights and lightsources bloom and streak - but everything not near the light sources looks not too soft - but the main thing is that the streaks and blooming are totally irregular, some lights have massive streaks, others very little, some in one direction, some in another - is there any filter or other image modifier that can approximate that? Thanks!! Max
Maximilian Sándor Lakner
Or just one intensity of streaks but radically different angles as the lightsource moves within the frame.
Max Field
Are we talking about one of these? http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1109888-REG/schneider_68_501277_2mm_streak_rotating_filter.html
Premium Member Satsuki Murashige Posted July 17, 2016 Premium Member Share Posted July 17, 2016 Or are your talking about motion blur?
Maximilian Sándor Lakner
No, I think I mean a filter with very irregular streaks on it, in all directions, so as the camera moves the streaks change rapidly. Maybe it doesn't exist.
Premium Member Satsuki Murashige Posted July 17, 2016 Premium Member Share Posted July 17, 2016 You could make a custom filter with KY Jelly or nose grease smeared onto an optical flat. Lots of people have made rigs with small prisms and bits of glass or clear plastic in front of the lens as well.
Premium Member Aapo Lettinen Posted July 17, 2016 Premium Member Share Posted July 17, 2016 smeared nose grease is great for this effect. you can fine tune the effect by making strokes with the grease to different directions. it works mostly by diffraction so the streak direction is sideways to the stroke direction (just like with fishing line based streak filters, a vertical line makes horizontal streak) . if one filter is not enough you can make another on the other side of the optical flat to save filter trays ^_^
Jon Kline
You might also try a vari-cross filter. These let you make two streaks of an adjustable angle around point light sources.
