Premium Member Jay Young Posted August 22, 2016 Premium Member Share Posted August 22, 2016 I need a 1200w PAR HMI 30-feet in the air, without renting a condor/genie. Will a Mombo-combo hold a 25lb lamp head, 30 feet in the air, with guy lines and a bunch of shot-bags? I don't have budget to rent a condor, and I'm in the middle of nowhere? The guy at the rental house is being a real [genuine people person]... Thoughts? I have a Sky-High here, but that only holds 50lbs and I feel like the Mombo-combo would work better as it has a much larger footprint and built in mounts for tying off guy wires. Thoughts? Is there a better light stand to use?
Michael Rodin
Look into wind-up stands. Italians of Avenger made some of the tallest, i.e. the Long John Silver.
JD Hartman
4 riser Mombo Combo only goes to about 23'. The masthead knot can be used to add guylines to any stand. I'd second the suggestion to rent a crank up stand.
Premium Member Jay Young Posted August 23, 2016 Author Premium Member Share Posted August 23, 2016 Thanks. It's been suggested that I use scaffolding as well. I'm sure we will get what we need accomplished!
JD Hartman
Scaffolding that tall would need to be attached to the building. More costly than a stand. Would the towable "baby" condor rented by Home Depot be an option?
Stuart Brereton
Those Avenger stands only go to around 18 feet, albeit with a larger payload than a Mombo, and they are huge. Last time I rented one, it came on it's own muscle cart.
John David Miller
I don't know of a stand that goes 30' in the air. If you are near a Home Depot, see if they have a "Towable 30' Boom Lift." This will probably be cheaper than renting and delivering a tall stand that won't get you the height you are looking for without scaffold.

I opted for 3 sections of scaffolding and a three riser stand. It's going in the forest with plenty of big trees to anchor things too - I guess, the key grip says its fine. That Home Depot 'towable boom lift' is awesome! I didn't even know that existed. I'll definitely be using that in the future!
