Mother! by Darren Aronofsky

I think it's OUTSTANDING and ASTOUNDING.....both as an allegorical piece and in terms of cinematography.....as a story in terms of what everything and everyone represents its superb in my view...I dare not spoil it for anyone until you all see it.....and in terms of the camera work....e.g. the continuous closeups that in my view add to the stranglehold the film has on us plus the grain of the 16mm film....the subdued light of it all......I hope you all see this film and come in and talk about it here.....

It sounds like dime store symbolism, but I wouldn't know because with a baby in my house I could never watch a movie where they tear apart a newborn and eat it...........

but that's just me... and Richard :)

The reviews on IMDB are interesting. They start of with suspiciously rave reviews, the we get:

I want my 2 hours back!
Utter bullshit masquerading as art, allegory or whatever excuse some deluded critics are calling it, 'Mother!' is a loathsome exercise in self-indulgence
Self Indulgent disappointment
The worse film ever I've have the misfortune to watch
Fell Incredibly Short of Expectations
Absolutely the worst film I've ever seen
Please, please, please.. For the love of everything and your own self worth. DO NOT see this movie. I truly do not have ANY clue why there is even one single good review
Retarded Cringefest
The Worst Movie Ever Made
If a movie had to be that bad, make the agony shorter!!!
Waste of money and your precious time
The worst movie ever seen!!!
Oh, no, where has my creativity gone?
Worst movie I've seen.
Absolute Mess
The worst movie I've seen in my life
Worst movie I watched in cinema
Garbage
Huh..? What a waste of two hours.
It's a sick man's nightmare
Vile filth
Worst Movie I Have Ever Seen
This movie is a joke
Worst. Movie. Ever.
Pretentious twaddle
I'm at a loss to explain just how BAD this movie is...
Piece of Crap!
Total Waste of Time
Like a very very very bad Rosemary's Baby.
What a steaming pile of " Rosemarie's baby " ripoff poo !!!!!
Set your expectations lower...no even lower.
A pretentious piece of garbage masquerading as art.
I give 1 star because I can't give 0
The story makes about as much sense as tits on a bull.

Stephen.....I don't need to watch child porn in order to know I do not want to watch child porn.

Is there anything in cinema that is not off limits now? Are you saying we should depict anything on screen, with zero restraint, and then just call it...."art."

The ignorance and pathetic envy of talent embedded here is astounding.

Open your little minds up and watch the film before commenting like a bunch of old hillbillies yapping on a porch.

You might learn something, which I realize will hurt, but pain often leads to better things. Some of you really need the lessons....

You've got to be kidding me Vince, "pathetic envy of talent". P-Lease.

This is a typical comment made by ignorant people who think there's no such thing as going too far in cinema, and anyone who disagrees with them is just a, " a bunch of old hillbillies yapping on a porch."

I am 100% certain Vince that I could come up with something in a film that would cause you to be outraged and say I went too far,

I might add, along the lines of Justin Hayward's comment, I'm willing to bet that neither of you, Stephen and Vince, have children.

I still think you should go see it Richard.....

To change the subject completely, I'm going to watch your Against the Wld film.....what was it shot on by the way....no tech specs on IMDB.....its great to be able to converse with people who have stuff out there....and Boddington....haha how Northern of you lad...I know you're Yorkshire not Manchester but still.....Leed Utd I take it.....

Stephen....I was trying to explain to you that I don't need to watch, FOR EXAMPLE, "child porn" in order to know that I won't like it.

Aronofsky is another one of those directors who, when they play it closer to the book, make incredible stuff. Like one title I recall is The Wrestler being great. But when they get all wild and avant-garde I lose interest. Can't sit through Requiem For A Dream.

If the movie has literal baby eating and all that it feels like something that'd get consumed by audiences on Netflix primarily because of it's shocking nature. Not to say that automatically makes the movie bad, but even great films like Oldboy solely picked up traction with younger western audiences because of all the shocking imagery it featured.

I was gonna see it in the theater, but two of my best friends saw it and one walked out and the other said it was the worst movie she had seen in years.

She said the problem is that it's really two movies in one and it's very repetitive. She also said it was funny because it was so stupid and over the top.

She was at a Q&A screening with Darron and said how much of a pretentious prick he was when the audience asked questions about how he came up with the concept. She said it was such a deranged nonsensical piece of poop, people just wanted to know why and HOW it could have been greenlit.

I'll wait for video when I don't have to waste 2 hours of my time sitting in a movie theater with a broken digital projector, a dirty screen and a blown speaker... because that's what theaters it will be showing in by the time I get to see it.

Yes, they do eat a baby. My friend said it's not like they have a baby's foot in their mouth, it's more subtle then that, so vore freaks don't apply. :)

Saw it today straight after watching it (benefits of cineworld unlimited) ?

Knew next to nothing about it going in, not even seen the trailer.

I did get lost in the cinematography, Matthew Libatique did a great job, loved the gorgeous images. Though the grain was very low for cropped 16mm, although that may be projector focus, only really noticed it a couple of times in close ups on skin.

I found myself thinking too much about the metaphorical meanings a bit too much that it took me out of the film a bit too much to really enjoy it, its slapped on a bit thick and obvious for my taste. (Wont post spoilers here)

Interestingly, the baby was about the only thing I knew before it started, and was feeling a bit apprehensive, but by the time you get there its so obvious that this is metaphorical that it didnt cause the kind of anger and upset I though it would.

Very brave and bold, but after the midpoint I just found myself thinking too hard about subtext to savour it.

Worth a watch and nice to see an art film with a wide release, just not my cup of tea

you cant have an opinion unless you watch something.....

Which is like some crackpot rod-whalloper asserting that you can't dismiss him as a crackpot rod-whalloper unless you're read the 4 inch thick book he's written on whatever crackpot notion he's trying to push. Whereas I tend to work on the principle that if the first two pages are complete drivel, there's no reason to expect that the next 998 are going to be any better.

In this case my my opinion is that if that many people go to the trouble of posting so many, (n most cases, quite verbose), negative reviews of a film, then there is most likely some basis for their criticism. (With one exception, the list I posted earlier are just the TITLES of the reviews, and that was just the first few pages).

Remember that quite a few films get few or no real reviews at all....

as a European I find it more shocking to be able to walk into a place and buy a gun and your 'right to bear arms' than any movie I will ever see where actually it's all pretend and nobody actually gets hurt hahaha sorry but I really do find the American culture and way of life quite shocking at times.....don't slam me for this it really IS a shocker for us in Europe....

Saying all this we all have movie tastes god know I don't particularly like zombie films.....

Yes, and you zany Europeans think it's fine for a 12 year old to have wine with dinner. :)

R,

There might be zany things in Europe.. but the above is not one of them.. no statistics to show France or Italy is full of teenage alcoholics .. rather it shows them how to drink responsibly .. when you consider I believe in most US states its legal to own a gun years before you can drink a can of Bud.. I,d rather a drunk taking a swing at me ..(its happens a few times, they always miss and you run away ..than a sober spotty angst 18 yr old with a gun..
