Premium Member Uli Meyer Posted December 21, 2017 Premium Member Share Posted December 21, 2017 More questions from this member. I just bought these Vinten legs which are fully functioning but look pretty badly beaten up. Has anyone got any tips on how to fix the chipped bits of paint? Is there any merit in sanding them off and repainting them? Thank you in advance for any comments and advice.
Brian Drysdale
I'm not sure about the leg tubes, I think they're anodised. The top casting should be possible, check out how they do cars, black stone chip paint may be worth checking out.
Mark Dunn
Hammerite may look good, but I don't know how durable it is. What's come off is probably a baked-on coating. You could ask Vinten, as long as they don't just tell you to send it in for a service.
Premium Member Phil Rhodes Posted December 22, 2017 Premium Member Share Posted December 22, 2017 I wouldn't sand it, I'd disassemble the thing entirely and have it all stripped and reanodised or powder coated, or whatever it was originally, paying attention to the thickness of the coatings to ensure it all went back together. Premium Member Uli Meyer Posted December 22, 2017 Author Premium Member Share Posted December 22, 2017 Thank you all for your suggestions. To do this properly might cost as much as buying a new one. Ive never disassembled a tripod before and wouldnt know where in London I could get it re-sprayed. I think Ill call Vinten and if they can offer affordable refurbishment, that might be the best option. Although I doubt it. Happy holidays! Premium Member Phil Rhodes Posted December 22, 2017 Premium Member Share Posted December 22, 2017 If vinten won't do it, I'd consider it an interesting project! Powder coating those brackets wouldn't be a fortune.
