A good light meter can outlast a career. It's an essential tool for the job, so my recommendation would be to save yourself the time, energy and money exploring alternatives. And instead just get your pennies together ASAP and make the investment. You only need a few hundred dollars.

Someone actually recommended this. Any possible recommendations?

I have "mylightmeter". It's free but keeps bugging you to upgrade to "mylightermeterpro". But it works :) I use it mostly for still photography shooting with film.

Agreed. I kinda made the amateur mistake of investing way too much on rigs and lens straight out the gate.
