Joshua Csehak
In the July 2018 AC, Jayson Crothers says, "If you open up to a T4 or T5.6, you end up losing detail and color in the fire, so a T8 is usually the widest I'll shoot on the burn stage..." I don't think I've ever noticed a change in aperture affecting the color. Can anyone explain this to me? Mark Dunn
It's not a change of aperture per se that has an effect- it's the change in exposure. Overexposed flame will look washed out. So if he's adding any light, he's lighting to f8.
Max Field
Yeah, the more light a source has, the more blown out or desaturated it can get.
Joshua Csehak
But he could just throw an ND on it. I get losing detail, since with a shallower DoF more of the fire will be blurry, but I don't know, I'm not convinced he's talking about exposure. Mark Dunn
I can't read his mind, but I don't think he means "detail" as in greater DoF- he's referring to gradation of colour and density which would be lost if overexposed. DoPs sometimes use qualitative terms- they're artists as well as technicians. Edited June 29, 2018 by Mark Dunn
