Hi

I have the retroscan Universal

For better quality ? , should I reduce the 2K to HD in FCPX or Resolve or have a direct scan in HD

Always scan at the highest resolution of the scanner and then de-scale in post. This will help retain as much quality as possible.

I scanned this home-movie I made with the retroscan universal 2k at full scanner resolution then cropped to 1080p, here is the result. I might not have used enough lighting when scanning, some areas are to noisy for my taste but then again I did not use the capturing software's de-noising setting.

Looked at film at highest res on YT. Looked pretty good, especially since it was done with a relatively inexpensive scanner. Nice to see sharp grain in your scans.

Some of the commercial scans I see have blurry grain. Looks like they don't have the film in focus. They must just slap on the reel and hit record.
