Dylan Grant
Watched JFK and The Doors again recently and was curious about some of the brown tones, notably in the first twenty minutes or so of JFK. It appears to be a light sepia/chocolate filter, but I have no idea and can't find any information about this. This same look shows up throughout The Doors too … I'm wondering if this was achieved through filtration, processing, or some combination of techniques. I don't have any great screencaps, unfortunately. The attached shot hopefully hints at what I'm talking about.
Reggie A Brown
Maybe it was color graded that way in post...
Stuart Brereton
Maybe it was color graded that way in post... Both films were photochemically finished, so it's more likely that the warm look was achieved via filtration.
Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted August 29, 2018 Premium Member Share Posted August 29, 2018 I think some shots were desaturated in an optical printer by combining a color IP and a b&w positive to make a desaturated dupe negative. Brown is really just desaturated warmth.
