Max Field
Curious to see if anyone could post some examples in which a scene was shot outdoors in the day and supplemented with Tungsten or HMIs as opposed to bounce. I know I've seen it before, but I'm having trouble visualizing it. Is it an uncommon practice? Is there a reason it's uncommon? I've considered it many times with my Kinos. Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted December 11, 2018 Premium Member Share Posted December 11, 2018 Supplemented in what way? As a key, fill, or backlight? Its pretty common but if you want to see a more deliberate use of HMIs to augment daylight, see War Horse Kaminski was trying to evoke the use of carbon arcs outdoors in old movies like the Technicolor movies of John Ford. You also see him doing that in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls.
Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted December 11, 2018 Premium Member Share Posted December 11, 2018 In terms of warm tungsten mixing with daylight (requiring very powerful tungsten units like Dinos, Jumbos, etc.) look at Storaros work like in Tucker or Sheltering Sky... or Swordfish shot by Paul Cameron. Max Field
Supplemented in what way? As a key, fill, or backlight? Any and all ways. Thanks for the suggestions. I just wanted to see how it looks when a DoP is really pushing the look.
