Focus-pulling monitor alternatives/rec's

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

So I'm somewhat in the market for another focus-pulling monitor, most likely something larger than a 7" (preferrable between the (9"–13" range). Usually when we talk about focus-pulling monitors we often mention primarily SmallHD and TVLogic. However, I would like to hear some other AC's chime in on their own personal experiences with other brands (e.g. Transvideo, Flanders, etc.). Any particular pros/cons to using any other monitor? Any newer models that stand out in your opinion?

Thanks!

Atomos monitors are surprisingly good for pulling focus, but they lack a lot of the customizable features a 502 would have.

When I've AC'd, I typically use a Flanders for the DP because it too lacks a lot of the features.

I’ve tried many and for me the best is the Small HD 1303. It has the size yet light weight and all of the tools one would need to be successful.

This is my set up: Small HD 1303 shown with Cine RT Base Unit and Preston HU III. And yes, even a portable fan for the hot summer days!

In 2019, y'see, we'll be shooting sunlit day exteriors at ISO 1600.

And 7 stops of ND! 😉
