The main character would select someone he had a quarrel with or didn't like for some reason and engage this person in some gambling games. He would allow himself to lose piles of money to the person to egg him on into the next game. The person would end up getting invited to this guy's house where the games would continue. The final game came down to a spinning table with a pistol on each side of it. One piston was loaded with a blank round and the other was loaded with a live round. The person could spin the table and stop it at anytime, pick up that piston and attempt to shoot the guy. If the person picked up the piston and shot it and it turned out to be the blank, then it was the guy's turn to pick up the other pistol with the live round and shoot the person. A few people lost theirs lives in this bet. The last guy to play the game in examining the pistols ahead of time determined that both pistols were loaded with blanks and that there was another guy behind a curtain in the room who would shoot a live bullet at the opponent. He ends up somehow overpowering them and shooting them both with their own gun.

I think it was in the late 80's
