Using Super 16 Lenses on standard 16mm format.

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am hoping to be shooting a short on an Eclair NPR which has not been converted to Super 16, and remains the standard 16mm format and I'm hoping to buy an Arri PL lens to C-Mount adapter in order to use Zeiss Super Speed Super 16 lenses. Would the fact these lenses are designed for Super 16 distort the image in any way? Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated.

No, being S16 lenses just means they form a large enough image circle out the back to cover a S16 frame. You could use 35mm format cine lenses, or even full frame stills lenses and the same focal lengths will give you the same basic image, the camera just crops a Standard 16 frame out of their image circles.

The problem arises only when you try to use smaller format lenses than the format of the camera - then you can get vignetting or portholing.
