Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted October 16, 2019 Premium Member Share Posted October 16, 2019 As a devote follower of all things Storaro, and in an attempt to own everything he's shot on disk, I discovered a DVD of the TV mini-series he shot right after he did "Wagner" and "Ladyhawke" (I'm probably one of the few who has watched the nearly 8 hour cut of "Wagner" more than once...). Unfortunately, this DVD is a dupe from a VHS tape so the quality is quite poor. The series at times is incredibly dark and contrasty, especially for a 1980's TV broadcast. There is one scene I've always loved because it is actually about light itself -- Peter the Great (Maximilian Schell) meets Sir Isaac Newton (Trevor Howard), who shows him his experiment to prove that sunlight is made up of multiple colors. As the scene starts, a beam of sunlight fades up inside a darkened room, and the beam passes through a magnifier glass and then a prism, where bands of color play on a white board. Peter passes through the colored light as he crosses to the opposite side of the table to talk to Newton.
