mohamad
Hi.I want to shoot a movie with Alexa Classic and I want It to be 4:3 and B&W. I don't have codex to shoot It RAW. Do I have to rent It and what is the best way to shoot It 4:3 and Black & white?
Stuart Brereton
The Alexa Classic has a 16:9 sensor. As far as I know, there is no way to crop it to 4:3 in camera. You would have to create custom 4:3 frame lines in the Arri Frameline creator to use as a guide while shooting, then crop the image in post. Black & White would also have to be created in post production.
Premium Member Phil Rhodes Posted January 25, 2020 Premium Member Share Posted January 25, 2020 On the upside, you could then choose a process to get from colour to monochrome, simulating some degree of orthochromaticity, or something else very clever and interesting.
mohamad
Hi. thank you for your reply. Is It better to shoot It in Raw?
Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted January 25, 2020 Premium Member Share Posted January 25, 2020 It's not absolutely necessary IF you can shoot 4444 ProRes Log-C -- raw is slightly better, no compression and things like sharpening are not baked-in. Neither is color temperature but if you are converting to b&w it's not much of an issue anyway.

The first original Alexa Classic is 16:9, but some of the later versions of the Alexa Classic series has the 4:3 options
