brandon kaufman
Hey! I'm in preproduction for a short film we're shooting on 16mm. I'm super inspired by Chantal Akerman and her long takes. Now, my fully winded camera will only shoot for 30-40 seconds. Does anyone have any creative workarounds / tricks / etc for doing long takes in this kind of situation? Thanks! Gregg MacPherson
Interested in the literal capture of space time with long takes..? Just borrow a camera with an electric motor..?
Premium Member Simon Wyss Posted March 3, 2020 Premium Member Share Posted March 3, 2020 Depending on your model you can possibly attach an electric motor. What serial number is it?
Gareth Blackstock
Maybe shoot the lowest frame rate your camera can do, just get the actor to only move toward you, sideways will ruin the effect, tripod the camera.... Or, when you run out of film, tell the actor to freeze until you can reload the camera and shoot from exactly where you left off... Requires a very patient actor! Learn to load really fast.... Or borrow and Bell & Howell 240, they last for ages! Around 2 minutes I think...
Phil Connolly
Design the shot around hidden cuts a la 1917 Or just use an alternate camera, I'm sure some Toronto camera hire companies have some Arri SR's (or similar) on the shelf that you could get for very little/nothing. Making a few phone calls is a lot easier then jumping through all the hoops the Bolex will generate.
