Backlighting Key to Fill

Recommended Posts

Good morning! Hope everyone is well. I am curious to see what people think about the key to fill ratio in this shot. I'm trying to learn more about back lighting and i really like the mood of this music video. Thanks guys!

I would just leave it like that and let the subject get silhouetted against the bright background.

Figured as much. They probably just used a nice monitor and lit it by eyes. I like the fact that his face still has detail and the shadows are dark but not noisy. Even for youtube it looks nice

You could catch the backlight with a beadboard for a slight light in the face without getting obtrusive.

I wouldn't be surprised if they used negative fill, actually. I did it on this short with a similar looking shot:

Did you shoot yours by eyes or meter?

If I were shooting this on film, there are two ways I would have metered this -- one, I would have imagined this as a 360 degree move around the person and metered the backlight as if it were a front light, second, I would have metered the shaft of light with a spot meter (trick there is that the smoke levels keep changing) -- I would have compared the two readings and then taken a guess!
