George Majewski
Hello Everyone, Just testing Arriflex BL16 camera. Today I received test footage from Cinelab. There are vertical lines which appeared in the middle of 100' daylight spool. I admit I loaded magazine in pretty much dark but not totally dark room. On the same take there was one line and then there are two lines. The lines stayed there for the remainder of the footage. Sometimes as one line sometimes as two. I would appreciate if someone could enlighten me what would be the cause of it.
Jordan Beard
This looks like a scratch on the film, possibly from debris on the the film gate.
George Majewski
Simple as that! Thanks! Now back to research how to properly clean the gate... Here is sample movie when lines appear:
Premium Member Dom Jaeger Posted July 2, 2020 Premium Member Share Posted July 2, 2020 One of the things we always did before renting out any film camera was a quick scratch test. You run some fresh film through for about 10 seconds, then snip it off, take the film out and inspect it for scratching. I used to mark the film with a sharpie before taking it out of the camera to indicate where the gate was, so that if a scratch showed up, I could tell where it began in the camera. A clean camera (especially the gate and pressure plate) is essential, but scratches can also be from film chips in the mag throat or burrs on film guides etc.
Robin R Probyn
If its a scratch in the gate or mag you should also see a build up too ..from the scratch .. this can help identifying where the problem is ..
George Majewski
Thank you for all suggestions. This is an old camera being out of commission for a long time. Still learning, but hopefully I will make it usable again.
