Mei Lewis Share Posted January 10 How was this done? Seems to get too close to the bridge and the the people to be helicopter, and the camera is very shakey
Dom Jaeger Share Posted January 11 Well it wasn't a crane! Helicopters can get pretty close to things, and zooms can make it seem even closer. Helicopter vibration was a huge barrier to getting smooth aerial shots until Nelson Tyler invented his first stabilized helicopter mount in the mid 1960s. In 1972 it was still pretty new tech, and depended a lot on the skill of both the pilot and operator. This aerial scene from Funny Girl in 1967 was groundbreaking, most aerial shots from this time weren't nearly as good:

Mei Lewis Author Share Posted January 11 Wow, would never have guessed a helicopter. I guess the camera was handheld, pointing out of the side?
Mei Lewis Author Share Posted January 11 I've been to that part of London and both those shots would be easy now with a drone. Might look into the legality of flying over the river, it should be far enough from people to be safe. Having a ride in a helicopter is on my bucket list. I nearly talked the police in South Wales into taking me up in theirs once, but it didn't happen.
