Super 8 SMPTE Test Film..where to buy it?

Recommended Posts

I don't think there is anything such as "test film". Shoot any super 8 stock. What I think you are looking for are SMPTE test charts which you shoot to test sharpness across the frame and so on. Probably available at any professional cinematography outlet. (I am nt an expert in this but am taking an educated guess).

Anyone know where to get this? I am testing out various lenses for use in an Elmo GS1200.

Thanks.

I believe that this are the film strip tests that the laboratories use to check their chemicals, never heard of it from a shooting person, maybe though it has to do with that I am not at all familiar with things that people use in the States.

Smpte stands for society of moving picture and sound engineers.

I know the Smpte colour bars or the time code formats, but never heard anything like this.

Do u mean the colour patches or grey scale by Kodak?

For colour and gamma tests or density tests of your film stock,

I believe that Kodak's grey scale and colour patches will work really well.

Also for lens test's u can use the century optics lens test charts or similar.

Not to split hairs but SMPTE stands for "Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers".

SMPTE (the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) is at

http://www.smpte.org/

They have various standards and test films available, for testing projector alignment and performance and image quality , but only in 16mm and 35mm. There are no super 8 test films.

So far as I know, the Elmo is a projector, so the only way a test chart would be useful to you is to shoot your own test film using camera and a focus and resolution chart, and use that to compare the projector lenses.

The SMPTE used to supply 8mm and Super-8 test films for projector and sound alignment. They no longer do:

For camera lens testing, one of the reflection test targets used for other formats may be used.
