It's a matter of image size. By using the film area normally used for a 16mm optical soundtrack, the Super-16 format offers a wider image area, well suited to 16:9 HD television production or blow up to 35mm theatrical prints with an aspect ratio of 1.85:1 or 1.66:1. A larger image area reduces graininess and improves sharpness.

 

When Regular-16mm is used for widescreen origination, less image width is available, and you crop some of the image height to get the wide screen aspect ratio. The image quality is good, but not as good as the larger Super-16mm format.

 

Standard SMPTE 201M specifies the Super-16 camera aperture area as 12.35 x 7.42 millimeters.

 

Standard SMPTE 7 specifies the Regular-16 camera aperture area as only 10.26 x 7.49 millimeters, but as noted, you need to crop the image height if the images are shown on 16:9 HD or blown up to 35mm widescreen.

Also, super 16mm isn't really for projecting on regular 16mm equipment. Even on modified projectors, it can have no sound. So pretty much it is only for blow up to 35 or transfer to digital.
