Are 9x9 filters still in use?

I have heard of 9x9 filters. Are they still in use? When is there a need for them? I would assume a 9x9 mattebox would be huge. Anybody how big they are?

I've never come accross 9x9 filters. I have yet to meet a 35mm lens that woud have to be covered by 9x9 filters. If they have a large front diametre, either 6x6 is enough (for anamorphic lenses or very wide angle lenses) or they have internal filtering (the Nikon 300mm for instance).

 

I'm not sure what filters 65mm lenses take, I would have to look that one up. Unfortunaltely I'm abroad at the moment, but I will be with my Arri catalogue again tomorrow.

From time to time we subrent a Cooke 14-70mm zoom for our customers. It comes with a set 9 x 9" filters to cover the lens. It is a Cooke in-house modification of the 20-100mm lens, therefore it has a large front element.

I think Panavision cameras use those too. I remember seeing pictures of the Cinealta with very big matteboxes and I think they might have been 9x9 filters matteboxes since they looked too big for 6x6. If the Cinealta uses those, I'm sure their 35mm cameras do too.

The Panavised CineAlta uses standard 4x5.6 Panavision filters, as do most of their 35mm equipment.

 

The 765 takes both 4x4 and 6x6 filters btw.
