What is best format for film transfer to then capture into NLE?

I have some 16 mm color negative that I want to transfer to something that I can then capture into

Final Cut Pro. What would you recommend using for the transfer? Thanks.

Depends what your final output will be. I usually transfer to mini dv and simply edit away, but there are a number of different, better, and more costly options.

direct to hard drive HD transfer, from a spirit (or comparable), at 4:4:4 is probably tops for anything that's ultimately going to end up on any flavor of video. and when you do all the math, you'll likely find that it's a very good deal (no need to pay for tape stock and rental of vtr)... though of course, there is more post work/time needed. hope this helps.

Direct to disk would be easiest. You don't need 4:4:4. And reliable codec will do you fine.

Thanks, those are helpful suggestions. I usually capture from Mini-DV but for this short project wondered

if I should go to a higher format tape (although I would have to rent a deck for the capture) but the hard

drive makes much more sense as an alternative. So, that answered my question. It's either Mini-DV

which I can already play or if I can do it then into a hard drive which sounds more appealing. Thanks!
