Questions about HDV

I'm in the market for a new camcorder and I'm interested in HD. However, besides the power it requires from a computer, I've heard that HDV has some issues when it comes to editing. In particular capturing motion. For example if the subject moves to quick, editing the footage will reveal the subject to appear "stuttered".

 

1. Is this due to interframe compression?

 

2. How is this remedied?

 

2.a. Are there NLEs on the market for this?

 

3. By the way, could someone explain 4:1:1(and other) color ratios please.

It can be artifacting from the DV codec, yes.

2. How is this remedied?

Limit your rapid camera movements.

2.a. Are there NLEs on the market for this?

It's not so much an NLE issue as an application issue. But remember how any compressing codec works; the more interframe changes, the higher bandwidth hogging. Something's got to give, and that something shows up in artifacting. Practise with your tools to find out the limits of their imaging usefulness.

3. By the way, could someone explain 4:1:1(and other) color ratios please.

There are only about 4 thousand books written about it. Look it up and tell us. ;)
