bad student

i am shooting on a boat. my back light rim will be on the shore at least 100ft from the actors. what stop would i be able to shoot at with 500t stock and a 4k par. i can't remember how to figure this out. can anyone help me?

Well it does really depend on numberous things.

 

According to the American Cinematographer Manual, a 4k PAR HMI without any lens at 100ft give you 790 FC. So with 500t, you'll have a T-stop a little higher than 16 (17.7 to be precise)

 

But here we have a HMI, and without lens, and it's something standard, it might change between different spot's brand.

Go to the website of the manufacturer of the light. Most lighting companies post the photometric data of all their lights on their websites. For Pars, they will tell you the footcandles for given distances with various lenses. I know that Mole and Arri do this.
