Valentina Caniglia
Dear All, I shot a feature film in Palestine in October 2007. The director contacted me today to ask me if we could make a day shot into night. I know that we could do this in DI but is it possible to do with an optical printing? Let me know Thank You all Vale
Dominic Case
Depends on the shot. It is easy to print it darker - if your negative is normally exposed, then you can go up to three stops darker. That should be more than enough to make it . .well . . extremely dark. A bit of blue usually helps the illusion too. But that won't make it night if you have sky in the shot. For a night shot, the light source is artificial, so the sky should be the darkest area, not the brightest. All you can do in a traditional grade is correct the colour and density in the entire frame.
