Shotgun Mic for extra tiny budget?

I need some sort of proper mic for my short film shot in super 8 for a festival over here I want to enter.

 

And it would probably be recording straight into a laptop. Oh gosh, hahaha.

Well source impedance an amplitude levels aside, (you will probally need an external preamp) that your computer is expecting to see, what the heck it's cheap enough to fool around with and mayby you can use it with a camcorder someday that has an external mic. input.

Okay yeah so I found another of the same description for 30 US all up including shipping and bid and won. So I'm pleased about that, I'm sure it'll be fine for my teenage shorts.

Look up a rental house in Melbourne and see what you can rent a good mike and boom for. I'd rather spend $100-200 for a week's rental on a MKH416 (or similar quality mike) and boom than buy a $100-200 mike. The microphone is the single most critical item in sound, modern electronics are pretty darn good and your recording quality is usually limited by the microphone itself.

 

An experienced boom operator is nice also but if there's prep time, just about anyone with good arms and "ears" can learn to boom in less than a day. They won't have the "radar" that an experienced boom op has but they'll have the basics down pretty good. Keeping the mike pointed correctly and at a consistent distance is important.
