Film tone gamma or post production?

Hello all:

 

i am a film school student and preparing to shoot my thesis short film next month.

the camera we gonna use is Panasonic AJ-HDC27H.

this camera provides both video gamma and film gamma.

under the film gamma we found the color becomes stronger than before.

and the dark area becomes really 'black'

so we have to use more lightings to make sure all the details will not 'eaten' by the dark.

 

i love the vibrancy and contrast myself.

but my DP prefer to use video gamma.

he think the ordinary grey frame offer more spaces to adjusting color and lighting during post production.

this problem really confuse me.

which one can i trust if i just use FCP to finish all the post production?

Maybe try shooting some tests. A small scene with the film gamma and then another with the video gamma. Then run it through your post production workflow and take a look at the results and what you had to do to get there.

There are also a few "film gamma" modes- using the FilmRec mode it should look kinda muddy and low contrast but it will give you more room in the highlights. You can also play with the paint menu to get the color where you want it.
